This very fine Recuay vessel, which dates to between AD 900 and 1300, shows an Andean individual holding a staff, a symbol of power, in his right hand. He wears a magnificent headdress, further indicating that he is a leader, as well as large ear spools. He is painted red. He’s standing next to a llama and may oversee a herd of llamas, be accomplished in animal husbandry, or even conduct caravan trade in the highlands.
