Today’s Hopi Indians live in compact villages on the southern edge of Black Mesa, Arizona. Their ancestors came from several groups of villages across the region. Between about AD 1240 and 1400, Hopi ancestors came together at one of these ancestral Hopi places—Homol´ovi, a cluster of seven large villages and many small settlements on the Little Colorado River 84 kilometers south of Hopi Pueblo.

The production of striking polychrome pottery and representations of stylized birds, especially parrots, as decoration are among the symbols that united pottery traditions and peoples across the Southwest at this time.
