The artful ways of the Kuna express an exuberant aesthetic system that informs all aspects of life, especially the beautiful mola blouses of women and the eloquent oratory of men. This concern for artistic form guides language, politics, hospitality, and the performing arts. Molas, with their multiple layers of meaning, give us insights into what the Kuna value, what they think, and how they feel; for virtually everything - from spaceships to squirrels to earthquakes - is reinterpreted by women in their own terms. The Kuna are keenly aware of how outsiders observe and represent them, and that their survival depends not just on the internal strength of their society, but also on a dialogue with the outside world. We invite you to join in that dialogue. - Dr. Mari Lyn Salvador, curator of |
