Wah-pe-cat-qua
Kickapoo Nation
The Kickapoo were living in Missouri and Illinois when they were asked to move west. Some went to Kansas, but most left for Spanish Texas to avoid Americans altogether. When Texans sought independance, they drove the Kickapoo out. Some went to Mexico. The Mexican government gave the Kickapoo a land grant. After more conflicts in the 1870's, the U.S. Army crossed the border to capture the Kickapoo and force them to Oklahoma. Wah-pe-cat-qua was one of many Kickapoo leaders during these difficult times. In 1985, Texas granted land to the Kickapoo. They currently live on both sides of the border.
