Try to Blend In
Catahecassa
Shawnee Nation
Led by Catahecassa, a group of Shawnee had a plan: remain in their homes and blend in by farming just like the settlers around them. White settlers resented the Shawnee's presence. Wanting their land, the settlers constantly harassed the Shawnee farmers. A skilled diplomat, Catahecassa was successful in keeping the settlers at bay. But after Catahecassa died, U.S. treaty commissioners told the Shawnee that they were no longer protected under the law. In 1833, the Shawnee signed a treaty, and they were removed to Kansas. In 1854, the U.S. drastically reduced their reservation. Settlers again threatened violence, forcing the Shawnee to move again, to Oklahoma. Today the descendants of Catahecassa's people are part of the Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma.
