Native Roots

Native Roots

Based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the extraordinary reggae band Native Roots “reaches out with a message of pride, unity, and respect among all nations, through the universal language of music.” Formed in 1997 by musician/composer John Williams (Sisseton–Wahpeton Dakota) and vocalist/lyricist Emmett “Shkeme” Garcia (Santa Ana Pueblo), Native Roots is dedicated to furthering the sound and spirit of Native American and reggae music, with a taste of blues and rock added for good measure. The band has performed at venues from reggae festivals to tribal fairs, with the likes of ska and reggae musicians Israel Vibration, Burning Spear, Toots and the Maytals, and Fully Fullwood, and Native artists Robert Mirabal, Keith Secola, and Indigenous, among many others. In addition to Williams and Garcia, Native Roots includes Carlo Johnson (Isleta/Diné) on bass and Harrington Bembridge (Jamaica) on percussion. Kurt Wyaco (Zuni Pueblo) joins the group as guitarist for today’s performance.
