Hunting hat

Yup´ik hunting hat
ca. 1870
Yukon River, Alaska
Wood, ivory, baleen, iron alloy, cordage

The ability of a Yup´ik man to be a successful hunter and provide for his people is dependent on his entering into respectful reciprocal relations with animals. The hunting hat helps empower the hunter, allowing him to attract sea mammals such as seals and otters.
