Walla Walla pouch
ca. 1840s
Buffalo hide, pony beads, sinew
34 x 15 cm
Presented by Elizabeth Neill Thompson

This early beaded pouch is fully rendered in pony beads sewn with appliqué stitch onto buffalo hide. While pony beads are not difficult to work with, their large size made it hard to create intricate designs. Typically, simple block designs, as seen here, predominate in pony beadwork.
